We took the kids on a 5 mile bike ride, but they'd swear it was the Bataan Death March!!! :)

I didn't recognize you!

That's how a friend of mine greeted me on Tuesday night at the gym.  I think I look the same and have a further ahead of me than behind, but that comment from a friend at the gym (whom I haven't seen in about 2 months) reminds me that I'm my own worst critic, with one or two exceptions. I'm still hovering between 205 and 208 and need to hit 195 ASAP for Highland Games on 11/07, but I'm every bit as strong as I was in 2011 weighing 235 pounds.  My deadlift is up to 475, my squat up to 385, and my overhead press up to 180.  I haven't maxed on bench press in a long time, so I have no idea where that's at.  I'm stronger, leaner, and lighter. I just hope I can turn this strength into performance on the field.  I've been doing a ton of cleans and snatch grip high pulls to work on my explosiveness, but I have been more worried about making weight than sport-specificity of my training.  I don't expect it to come together for a peak till San Antonio i...

Mountain Tough. Beach Ready

 I just got back from a week in the Andes Mountains and I am content with how well I handled the elevation and all the hiking.  For a full week I was living and playing at elevations between 13,300 and 16,200 feet.  I lost 8 pounds in the process and never got sore.  The only downside is my sinuses.  The dry air caused some horrific sinus bleeding.  I haven't thought about how to prepare for that other than take saline rinses with me. I have found that the more I train for functionality, the more necessary supplemental vanity lifts become.  Devoting more time to cardio and high rep calisthenics has paid off in my ability to move fluidly through the trails, but my looks have suffered.  My shoulders, arms, and chest have lost considerable size while my legs, abs, and back have all gotten very lean. 14 SEP: 3 workouts in one day!

Sunday was incredible. We had great temperatures and low humidity, so I was eager to do as much as possible. Noon-ish workout: Front squats: 115 x 2 x 15 Overhead press: 105 x 2 x 15 Pullup: bodyweight x 2 x 6 Bent Row: 95 x 2 x 15 Swiss ball crunch: 20, 10 2:30 - 4:00: Hiking for 4-5 miles through some moderately difficult terrain. The hike was nice. We broke a good sweat and kept the pace very brisk. 11:20 PM: Indoor soccer HOLY COW!!!! This is like running 20 yard sprints non stop and in every conceivable direction for an hour. INCREDIBLE!! We had enough players for subs, but I still got a lot of time on the field.
